Educating, Feeding and Caring for Children and Families in Baja California, Mexico

      Lantern Hill Community

Education (click here to learn more)

The number one way out of the cycle of poverty is to be educated.  Hunger, instability, poor living conditions, difficult access to clean water, no living wages, geographical happenstance and many others contribute to education taking a back seat to surviving.

Lantern Hill and Sembradores del Rey are making surviving easier, safer and more stable so that families and children have a chance to focus on education.  With nutritious meals, educational opportunities, cleaner living environments, drug prevention programs, english and spanish classes, and various art and self esteem building programs we are making a difference.

Our community outreach center, “The Grace Place,” supports the largest working poor community in Ensenada.  Through deep relationships within the community, we are able to affect changes among children, young people and mothers and fathers.  These relationships translate into community leaders and better students.

“When basic needs are met, bellies are full and homes are safe... the education of children can flourish and begin to bring an end to the cycle of poverty.  This is what we do.  Everyday.”

Nutrition (click here to learn more)

Imagine a 7 year old walking to school every morning or a single mom riding the micro bus to the sweatshop each day with only a small plate of rice and beans in their stomach, not sure what they might have for their next meal.

Unfortunately, that is the plight of the people Lantern Hill serves in Ensenada, Mexico.  Only 99 miles south of the border to the United States, tens of thousands live this reality each day.  Add to it.. no clean water running out of the faucet, no living wage to support nutritious meals and substandard hazardous living conditions.

We are committed to providing at least one nutritious meal per day for families partnering with our community center.  We know that a child or family that is not worried about food insecurity can focus on being a family and getting a good education.  We will provide a clean water source, affordable staple foods and working with local government to offer nutritious meals at every elementary school in our community.

Care (click here to learn more)

Care comes in many different forms.  Care you have for your neighbor.  Care you show to those you love.  Care for those who are struggling and need your help.  Lantern Hill takes every opportunity to offer care and support to the communities, children and families we come in contact with every day.

Specifically, Lantern Hill offers events that boost support for  families during special holidays (ie. Dia De Los Niños, Las Posadas, Christmas, Dia De Los Madres, and other special days).  Lantern Hill also offers special events that focus on health & spirituality.  Each event is designed to boost self-esteem, increase family time spent together and offer a new way of caring for eachother.

Spending time with otehrs is also very important to our care component.  “Be Time” where we talk, hug, walk, play and share with others is vital to the art of care for your new friends and your established relationships.
