LATEST NEWS REGARDING UNITED STATES STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL WARNINGS / ALERTS
The State department issued a Travel Warning on February 8, 2012. As we do with all travel warnings, we have reviewed this warning and considered what, if any, changes we should make to our safety policies and procedures and concluded the following:
1. Through our continued monitoring of the community climates here in Ensenada, we can assure our participants that the specific incidents and situations referred to in the travel warning are not occurring in Ensenada or within 90 miles of anywhere we have ongoing service opportunities. The travel warning specifically names states and cities anywhere from 90 miles to over 1,000 miles away from Lantern Hill.
2. While there have been no reported incidents on the toll road from Tijuana to Ensenada, travel through Tijuana was specifically noted in the warning. Accordingly, we will change our entry route into Mexico and be crossing the border at the Otay or Tecate border crossings, which are 15 & 30 miles east of Tijuana.
We have researched and conversed with several other servant mission groups to conclude that NO incidents as noted in the Travel Warning have occurred in traveling or serving in or around the Ensenada area.
The safety of our participants is very important to us. Over 1,000 volunteers have served with Lantern Hill over the last five years without incident. We believe that this is due to our commitment to the travel advice given in the travel warning itself:
1. We do not travel at night and stay only on well traveled, well policed roads
2. We do not frequent areas we are unfamiliar with or have potential for crime
3. We do not allow groups to travel without guides and native language speakers
4. We encourage participants to be very low key, without jewelry and expensive items
5. We encourage conservative dress and respectful behavior.
We feel confident that your service experience will be safe and without incident during your time spent with Lantern Hill and Ensenada, Mexico.
Safety, security, and feeling like you are at home. For the last five years, Lantern Hill has hosted over 1,000 volunteers over 5 years without any incident and without fear. Lantern Hill takes safety seriously and works hard to create an environment that is equal to or safer than your community at home.
Feeling uncomfortable due to seeing new things, witnessing a deep level of poverty and need, or working in environments that look and feel very different that what you are used to seeing is a healthy part of the mission experience. Being scared is not. Lantern Hill has hosted over 1,000 volunteers over 5 years without any incident and without fear.
